Baton Rouge, La. -- Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Executive Director Kenneth Miles spoke to students attending the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association (LSPA) Summer Institute Tuesday. Miles explained the road map to be successful in the Journalism Building at Louisiana State University.

“As an educator, you have an expanded role that role can be big brother, uncle, dad, social worker,” he said. “Essentially telling people what they need to hear and not what they want to hear.”

In the seven years, Miles has been with LSU, he has helped improve the Tiger football graduation rate from 54 percent to 70 percent.

“You can’t lead a horse to water and make him drink it,” Miles said. “Success does not happen by one person alone; the support structure would be the adviser, the deans, and the life skills manager.”

Miles lives by a motto: “Be a man for others.”

He continued, In order to uplift others it's important to be the one to uplift others.

“The only time I lean down to look at anyone is to be able to pick them up to where I am,” Miles said.

His grit has to do with the inequalities that exist within society.

“There are certain things in my opinion that are abysmal,” Miles said. “You could look at the education gap, wealth gap, and incarceration numbers. Those are the things that make me want to do what I do.”
