Baton Rouge, La. -- Louisiana State University Horticulturist Debra Coltharp spoke Wednesday to students of the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association (LSPA) Summer Institution in the Journalism building on LSU; Coltharp spoke about her average day.

“The cultivation of a garden, orchard, or nursery; the cultivation of flowers, fruits, vegetables, or ornamental plants,” as defined by dictionary.com.

An average day starts at six in the morning and ends at two in the afternoon for Coltharp. She usually works on filling in empty spots in gardens and cutting limbs that hang over sidewalks for safety reasons.

“Safety first, that is usually what takes up most of our time,” Coltharp said.

Debra and her team whether the weather is good or bad makes sure the campus is available for travel.

“Every minute of every day are spent out there,” Coltharp said.
